K-5 Science Curriculum Modules Recommendations

Following completion of field testing (October 2001 through March 2002) of various K-5 science curriculum modules, the six grade-level Field Test Study Groups (FTSGs) made recommendations (3/26/2002) to the Elementary Science Steering Committee (ESSC) for which modules to adopt.   Building representatives to the ESSC from each elementary school then shared this information with the staff in their school.   Teachers in each elementary school were then asked to arrive at a consensus at each grade level for which modules they wanted to see adopted, and school ballots reflecting these choices were FAXed to the 2001-2002 Subject Matter Area Leader for Elementary Science.   Using the formula for weighting adoption votes as specified in our district's Resource Materials Protocol Handbook, a list of recommended modules was compiled from the votes by the FTSGs, the ESSC, and the school ballots received through 4/9/2002.   The results of this process were reported at the April 9, 2002 meeting of the ESSC and then presented to Instructional Council on April 10, 2002.

The table below indicates the modules recommended for each LSD K-5 science unit. The percentages represent the portion of the votes for each of these recommended modules from the FTSGs, the ESSC, and the school ballots received from 25 of our 30 elementary schools through 4/9/2002, weighted according to the formula as specified in our district's Resource Materials Protocol Handbook.

Note that for the third-grade third-quarter unit, two modules are recommended.   Since no single module was found that did an adequate job of addressing both the motion and force benchmarks and the simple machines and mechanical devices benchmarks included for this unit in our science pacing guide, the third-grade FTSG recommended adopting both a Battle Creek module (to deal with motion and force) and a BESU&C module (to deal with simple machines) in order to provide adequate development of the content for this unit.   Additional ESSC recommendations and comments are provided below the table.   A separate web page provides information on the costs of purchasing these recommended modules.
