Figure 3.1

The files containing the various figures from my dissertation have, unfortunately, been lost.   However, I have reconstructed and modified the network map of "Figure 3.1" to include now both most of the information contained in the original figure, as well as ideas that have been added to the evolving list of secondary text terms as this "exploration" has developed.   Also, I have included labels for each of the links in the network map, something that was not part of the original figure.   Someday, as time permits, I hope to learn how to convert the full network map to an active "image map," which will allow the user to click on any node in the map and thus be taken directly to its corresponding "secondary text" web page.   However, until that dream is realized, you can only get to the "content" for each of the nodes via the index of secondary terms.

A reduced version of the network map -- just to give you a rough sense of what you're getting into -- appears below.   The full network map -- drawn large enough so all of the text within the nodes and links is legible -- requires a rather large file (and a good deal of scrolling, since it will not all fit in the dimensions of a typical screen).   To view the full-size network map (~80 Kb), click here.

One final note:   This network map is drawn with the purpose of linking ideas that are related to describing and accounting for wind.   Certainly, other webs could be constructed to show these relationships in alternative ways.   Also, many more possible links could be added among the nodes already included in this network map (e.g., the various meteorological instruments listed near the upper, right-hand edge of the map could be linked with the quantities they are used to measure, such as "barometer" with "atmospheric pressure").   However, I have chosen, in an effort to keep the map from becoming even more complex, not to try to include all such possible links.
