NOTEOur ESSC-sponsored "Science Notebooks" professional development program was originally envisioned for the 2005-2006 school year as a three-session 2005 Fall Semester series to be offered during the morning PD sessions of September 14th, October 3rd, and November 8th.

The web page as it appears below reflects this original plan.

Positive feedback following the September session led to extending the series with an additional three morning PD sessions for the 2006 Spring Semester on February 1st, March 1st, and April 26th.  For more details about the extended series click here.

This ESSC-sponsored series of three half-day PD sessions (in September, October, and November) will explore the use of "science notebooks."  Science notebooks are an authentic tool for doing real science, and they can play a significant role in the science, language arts, and mathematics learning of elementary school children as well.  We will consider what can be included in a science notebook and how it might best be organized.  We will discuss when and how to use science notebooks with students as they develop, both across the school year and across grades.  In the weeks between each PD session, participants will introduce and use science notebooks with their students, and then bring examples of student work to the two later PD sessions in October and November for shared analysis and discussion.  Each participant will also receive a copy of the book Science Notebooks: Writing about Inquiry (2003) by Campbell and Fulton to guide our shared learning and discussions.

Additional Information about the "Science Notebooks" PD Series

Following a suggestion made by Jacque Gerard at our first workshop, we have established a "Yahoo! Group" to allow ongoing discussion (both during and after this "Science Notebooks" PD series) of ideas and questions regarding the implementation and use of science notebooks with elementary school students.  To participate in our "Sci-NB" Yahoo! Group you will need to have a "Yahoo! ID" and then "join" the group.

At its October 11th meeting, the Elementary Science Steering Committee (ESSC) voted to extend our "Science Notebooks" PD series beyond the originally planned three half-day sessions in September, October, and November, 2005.    We now expect to resume the series in February 2006.
