We began our ESSC-sponsored "Science Notebooks" series with three half-day PD sessions (in September, October, and November, 2005).  The intent of this series was to provide teachers with an opportunity to explore the use of "science notebooks," especially as they might be used to enhance our district's elementary science education program.  Science notebooks are an authentic tool for doing real science, and they can play a significant role in the science, language arts, and mathematics learning of elementary school children as well.  We began by considering what can be included in a science notebook and how it might best be organized.  We have also discussed when and how to use science notebooks with students as they develop, both across the school year and across grades.  In the weeks between each PD session, fall participants have introduced and used science notebooks with their students, and then brought examples of student work to the two later PD sessions in October and November for shared analysis and discussion.  Each fall participant also received a copy of the book Science Notebooks: Writing about Inquiry (2003) by Campbell and Fulton to guide our shared learning and discussions.

We are now planning to extend this PD series to three more half-day sessions (in February, March, and April) during the 2006 Spring Semester.  We encourage those of you who participated in the 2005 Fall sessions to continue with us this Spring.  We also encourage those of you who couldn't make the 2005 Fall sessions to join us as we embark on "Part 2" of our exploration of the uses of science notebooks.
